Wooplaw Workdays

Throughout most of the year there is a workday or an event once a month – usually on the last Sunday. Have a look at the programme of events to see what is planned for this year. About a month in advance of each work day we post more detail on the “What’s on at Wooplaw “ calendar in the talk wooplaw section of this website. The vagaries of the weather and other unpredictable events mean that we do sometimes have to make last minute changes. If in doubt, give Bob a ring beforehand on 01578 730327.

Unless the programme says otherwise, events and workdays start off at the log cabin in Big Wood.

On workdays we tend to carry out tree care work, path upkeep and general maintenance work on the fixed facilities. There are always simple maintenance tasks to be done around the woods that require no specialist skills or knowledge, just simple tools like secateurs and spades. So, why don’t you come along and lend a hand? You’ll be very welcome – just come in old clothes with strong boots or wellies and a pair of garden gloves. Fresh air, exercise and you’ll have made positive difference to the environment!

A number of volunteers have been trained in the use of chainsaws and woodland management and we can call on their skills when necessary. For those who would like to get more involved there will be training opportunities either at or through Wooplaw.

We Look forward to seeing you!

Wooplaw Events

Several times a year there are organised events for the general public. Again we post more detail on the “What’s on at Wooplaw “calendar in the talk wooplaw section of this website. These events are always fun and help to cultivate a woodland culture. We have regular events at Halloween and Christmas that are primarily for children (of all ages!!). There have been a very wide range of events – including carving, greenwood working, snigging, willow crafts, charcoal production, wildlife, music, dance and other artistic events. More willing hands are always needed whatever is happening. Events need organising, publicity, setting up, manning and – of course – there is the clearing up afterwards. As everyone knows more hands make even the most daunting task more manageable.

Wooplaw Wardens

Wooplaw Woods are owned and managed for the benefit of the community in general. We are a charity and a limited company, so we are obliged to have directors, produce proper financial accounts and hold an Annual General Meeting. But apart from that we are very relaxed. We abandoned the use of a formal committee as a management tool many years ago. Instead a group that involves the directors and a group of woodland wardens makes the decisions.
What is a woodland warden you may ask? Well it is just someone who visits Wooplaw on a regular basis, cares about what goes on, and is prepared to offer their time to make things happen.

There is a management meeting after every workday/event. In summer, autumn and spring we meet in the evening at the log cabin - but in winter we may seek the comfort of one of our homes! You are very welcome to come along. If you haven’t been before, check with Bob on 01578 730327 about timing and venue.
