JUNE 2010

Hi All

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We had a meeting in June and I've put the minutes on our website - LINK

We've decided to purchase a shipping container to use for storage at the woods.
Although we don't have many valuable things to store, it will be much better if we can keep simple things like spades, bowsaws and wheelbarrows there and expect to find them next time we go up.
The plan is to get a green one and site it near the Axehead carpark, hopefully behind some vegetation so it doesn't look like an eyesore.
It will make a big difference to any working groups using the woods just having things available.

Although we had a very successful demonstration of archery from SURA we felt that actually having arrows fired in the woods would not be possible.

Minutes etc

Dry Stone Walling - this weekend.
Mike Bisland came and had a look around for the Dry Stone Walling Association SE Scotland branch
They are coming on Sunday 4th July and will be doing some work on the walls near the log cabin.
This is a great chance to come and see them, possibly have a go and find out more about their group and activities.
Last year they came down and did some work on the wall at Gullet and Alan Fox "adopted" it and came back loads of times to finish it off.

What a monumental waste of time
On the 30th anniversary of PacMan, Google put a tribute PacMan game on its home page.
The statistics of the extra time using Google adds up to nearly 5 Million hours spent playing PacMan
See more about it here. Play Google PacMan HERE

Now if only people spent 5 million hours at Wooplaw.

Green Woodworking Weekend

I don't know how many people made it but there were 33 cars in the carparksa nd along the road side.
Probably over 60 so a great weekend

We made a shaving horse and it galloped off to Drumbowie Environment Action Group at Falkirk.
There are now three polelathe beds at the green woodworking building.
Keith, Kenny and Eoin got them working and used over the weekend.

We discovered we have dozens of camping spots.
There were tents in the camp site, the woods, the teaching area, the nursery, the field next door and beside the new shelter.

It was brilliant to see the woods getting used by everyone.

Ian gave us some more tools and sharpened others.

Graeme carved spoons.

Anna and Lisa had a whale of a time pond dipping and doing great stuff with the kids.

We felled a leaning tree for timber.

The archers arched

This annual event seems to be taking on a life of its own. Nice to see everyone there again.

Total Gridlock.

Hazel if you can use it.
The ranger service at the Pentlands have a load of coppiced hazel which they can't use.
They have run out of room for dead hedges and habitat piles.
If anyone wants it for hurdles, fences or sticks then get in touch.

It's a pity we are not by the sea; -

Scottish Coastal Rowing Project
Hi all
Some of you may have seen the recent coverage of the Scottish Coastal Rowing Project on BBC Landward, or already be aware of it. For those who are not, have a look at http://scottishcoastalrowing.org.

What a great project! However it seems to be as much a community boatbuilding project as a rowing one - hence this message.

For many years there has been talk within CWA about instigating a boatbuilding project, for a number of very positive reasons. However it has yet to happen and as far as I am aware there have been no developments recently (though happy to be corrected on this). Mere survival of both member groups, and the CWA itself, has doubtless been a more pressing recent priority.

But maybe this new coastal rowing - and boatbuilding - project presents a new opportunity to take forward this CWA aspiration. Could we piggy-back on to this? Or link up in some other way? We could perhaps thus avoid re-inventing the wheel.......Already a number of communities are involved which contain CWA member groups so it may be that there is already connection at a local level. The number of CWA groups who are either coastal or based near inland lochs must be 50+ easily giving a good likelihood that there is a reasonable sized potential community of interest within our membership.

What do people think?

Hi Jamie

I suggest that you visit Portsoy weekend of 26/27 June for the Traditional Boat Festival. There you will be able to make contact with groups already into traditional boat building, encouraging youngsters to get involved, both with the building, repair, rope making, crewing and sailing.

It also happens to be a superb weekend for all visitors, with in addition excellent local produce stalls, sampling among others kippers, smokies, biscuits, cakes, beer and whisky.

Have a look at www.scottishtraditionalboatfestival.org.uk

John Adam

Wildlife Watch
Angela and Jon used to run a wildlife watch group at Wooplaw on the last Sunday of the month.
It was very popular with the youngsters (and some of the old timers)
We wondered if anyone felt that they could volunteer to start something like this this again.
If we could get a steering group together it wouldn't be such a chore for any one individual.
If you'd like to lend a hand then contact me at info@wooplaw.org.uk and I'll put like minded individuals in touch with each other.

Toilet
At our wardens' meeting we decided to give up on the "new" toilet and refurbish the old one.
On the new one, the roof leaks and the boards are rotting and the water table below it is so high that it can't work properly as a compost toilet..
We'll renew the floor of the old one, make sure the paths are passable and do all the other things necessary.
Bob Stock is going to take on the task of overseeing.
We'' send a plea for help when we get to the demolition phase on the new one.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
llegal Logging
There is a petition urging EU to pass bold new laws to curb illegal timber trading.

Illegal-logging destroys forests and communities all over the world. As a major timber importer, new EU regulations could help undercut this black market and protect forests worldwide, unless powerful companies succeed in watering down the agreement. Let's push back with a roar of strong support for forests -- click below to take action:
