Fergus and friends at Gullet Wood

P7 from Pathhead School were down today in Gullet Wood.

They had a project they are working on and meanwhile some made shelters which Anna tested by throwing a bottle of water over them.
Some did tree identification – everything seems to start off as an oak/birch/beech/anything……… and looked for the sculptures along the path.
Lunchtime was great with a fire at the roundhouse.
There’s also a bit of artwork hidden in the woods now.

A few wet feet from paddling in the burn but we think they all got back onto their bus to go home.

They’re hoping to be back soon too.  Good to see you all.

There are a few ‘springs’ near the greenwood shelter so some ditches to take it down the hill would be useful.

What we have

At the wall the burn is flowing and coming through the old archway.
There’s a lot of clearing out to do as it’s silting up everywhere but a few willing hands at the end of the month should sort that.

Here’s what we have and below it is the design brief for the Dry Stone wallers.

We’ll see how it goes.

The boggy bit in Axehead Wood catches a lot of water coming out of the old field drains which were put in before it became a woodland.

This gives us a really soggy bit to try and walk around the pond.

Last week Kirsty and Will attacked it and opened up a channel to the pond. This week it was amazing the difference. This weekend a group tackled it and continued the good work. Finding a few springs (broken pipes) and diverting them to the pond and enlarging the ditch through the bog.

There’s probably tumbleweed, camels and desert rats there now after the water it shifted

It did however seem a bit familiar – I remember getting dirty there in 2008.

Then there was a lot of flowing water then and the pond was high. A lot dryer this year.

The other thing we’ve done was move the path around that bit of the pond to the top of the bank. It makes more sense and should be easier to maintain. We’ve put down a lot of old tree tubes as a guide. Just keep walking back and forward over it when you visit.

Keith and crew had a busy day cutting willow at Gullet and then later at the tunnels in Axehead Wood.

Hopefully lots to use later in the year.

The weather has really brought it on and some is even starting to break into leaf. Not really like March.

There are a few varieties with pussy willow on them.

Here’s one down at Gullet.

It’s really amazing how much has changed in a few weeks.
Gone is the bitter wind and the snow and frost.
It’s really like July except the trees don’t have their leaves on. Most confusing.
A walk through Gullet gave a few pictures of the spring flowers coming out. The snowdrops are nearly over since taking this.
